Atlanta University Center Thanksgiving Celebration
During the Thanksgiving holiday, college cafeterias are closed which means many students who cannot go home for the holidays will not have a hot meal. In 2017, the inaugural AUC Thanksgiving Celebration took place. The students are the guests of honor, and they dine on food prepared by an Executive Chef who volunteers his personal time to this worthy cause. In addition, the students are served by HBCU alums, and all students leave with a monetary gift and/or gift card. Since 2017, this event has grown to include corporate sponsorship from Kroger and a partnership with the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance. The AUC Thanksgiving Celebration was the impetus for partnering with several Spelman Alumnae to raise additional funds to pay off balances for students of Spelman and Morehouse Colleges so they could register for the Spring Semester.
This event takes place the Tuesday before Thanksgiving every year!
Thank you, Master Chef Dorian Hunter!
In 2019 she won Master Chef, and she has been SUPER busy ever since. Despite this, she still made time to make three dishes to feed 150 students and volunteers for our 2019 Thanksgiving Celebration! We are so very thankful!
Say Yes to the White Dress Event
All Spelman College students are required to wear a white dress, flesh toned pantyhose and black closed toe shoes during Spelman College's Founders' Day service. The Say Yes to the White Dress initiative arose out of the need to provide white dresses for students who cannot afford one. Since 2016, Say Yes to the White Dress is a popular service project where hundreds of white dresses are collected and students can shop for a dress, black closed toe shoes and pantyhose for free.
This event takes place the Saturday before Founders' Day every year!
